Protect Yourself From Fraud in The New Year

Cases of fraud are, unfortunately, on the rise, and we’re particularly concerned about those that target Bellco members. We feel that it’s imperative that you understand the hallmarks of these scams and how to protect yourself from falling victim to the very real-seeming scenarios.

In numerous instances, the con artists impersonate Bellco associates, including tech support or even Fraud Department employees. Typically, the fraudster uses text messages or even direct phone calls to the member, claiming to have found an issue with the member’s account, including things like fraudulent charges or technical issues with online banking. In some cases, the swindler asks the member to withdraw money—up to even very large sums—and to lie to the teller about the withdrawal. In other cases, the con artists direct members to a URL or QR code that will ultimately drain an account. In many instances, the fraudster will work to get the member to divulge personal information, including username and password, debit/credit card information, and even Social Security number. 

If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from Bellco, beware of the following red flags:

  • Pressure to make quick decisions especially based on threats that feel real and serious. If you’re speaking with a real Bellco associate, you should never feel pressured into making choices about your account.
  • Tactics that involve you turning over Multifactor Authentication (MFA) codes. These codes verify your identity and therefore play a large role in protecting your transactions, including on Zelle, in wire transfers, or with credit or debit cards. 
  • Demands that you lie or keep transactions secret. At Bellco, we take your financial wellbeing seriously, including keeping all transactions above-board.

Remember, Bellco will never call or text you and ask for your personal or account information. If you think your account security has been compromised, please contact our Fraud Department at 303-689-7548.

Bellco 2025 Board of Directors Nominations

Every year, the Bellco Board of Directors selects a Nominating Committee that nominates candidates for election to the Board. The members of the Board ensure that the credit union is following federal and state credit union laws and any other applicable government regulations and that the credit union adheres to the organization’s bylaws. The Board also maintains Bellco’s financial stability by following good business practices, and it sets the general direction of the credit union.

There are five seats up for nomination in 2025, and the Nominating Committee has nominated five incumbents for those seats. The incumbent Board Members who have been nominated are:

Andrew Murray – Board member since 1987 and former board chair

Mark Goodman – Board member since 2017

Jane Prancan – Board member since 1991 and former board chair

Alejandra Spray – Board member since 2017

Josefina Raphael – Board member since 2024

If you are interested in being nominated for a Bellco Board of Directors position, you may do so by petition. The election will not be conducted by ballot, and there will be no nominations from the floor when there is only one nominee for each position to be filled. Please send any questions regarding the nomination process to nominatingcommittee@bellco.org.

Your nomination by petition must include the following: (1) signatures of members in good standing that make up at least one percent (1%; 3,822 signatures as of October 31, 2024) of all Bellco members, as well as their addresses and daytime phone numbers; (2) a signed certificate from the nominee or nominees stating that they are agreeable to nomination and will serve if elected to office; and (3) a statement of qualifications and biographical data from each nominee.
